About the winery
The Dönnhoff Family runs one of the best-known wineries in Oberhausen, Nahe. The winery is not only a respected producer in the area but also the keeper of the region’s most exceptional terroir — its most famous Große Lagen.
Dönnhoff specialises in Riesling and Burgundian grapes, including Chardonnay, Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc). The estate is a member of the Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter (VDP) and adheres to its strict quality standards and labelling practices.
History
Records suggest Dönnhoff was already known in 1761, making the winery centuries old. The estate helped give Riesling its popularity in the area and was one of the first to vinify and bottle individual expressions of the land as single vineyard wines.
The Dönnhoff Family is also responsible for planting the first vines in the now-famous Oberhäuser Brücke vineyard, a German Grand Cru. Today, the fourth generation runs the estate with Cornelius Dönnhoff, who has helped establish Dönnhoff as a world-class brand in the international market. Dönnhoff is a synonym for Nahe and its superb wines.
The Terroir
Nahe is one of the smallest wine regions in Germany, and it covers the vineyards around the Nahe River. The hills have varied sun orientation and well-draining volcanic soils, allowing winemakers to ripen Riesling and other varietals with remarkable success.
Nahe’s finest wines are made with Riesling, but Silvaner, Müller Thurgau and Burgundian varietals are well represented in the region’s 4,000 hectares of vines.
Some of the most outstanding vineyards in Nahe are steep, with an inclination of over 70 degrees, making them increasingly difficult to work. Unsurprisingly, the VDP classified these plots as Grosse Lage and Erste Lage.
